PNG, WebP, AVIF or SVG? A practical guide

Format debates get religious fast. They shouldn’t. The right format is a function of the asset and where it’s going — nothing more.

A quick heuristic

• Icons and logos → SVG. Infinite scale, tiny size, and it becomes code cleanly.
• Photography → WebP or AVIF. Real compression wins with no visible loss.
• Transparency + broad support → PNG. Still the safe default when in doubt.
• Legacy or email → JPG. Unglamorous, universally understood.
